Prof. N. Rangabashyam, Former Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Proctology and Clinical Professor of Surgery, Madras Medical College and Government General Hospital, Madras has been a pioneer in the field of Surgical Gastroenterology and Proctology in India.

He was first appointed as Professor of Gastroenterology in India in November 1974. He was the first to start a separate department and the first to start the M.Ch. (Surgical Gastroenterology) degree course in India. In addition, he started the Ostomy Department in the General Hospital of Madras and established the first Enterostomal therapy Diploma for nursing sisters in this country. As an academician, he has over three decades of teaching experience both at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. He has conducted various workshops and public awareness programs on Gastro-Intestinal diseases in India. He has been closely involved with conducting Regular Medical Education programs all over India.

His contributions on Colitis, Bowel Cancer, other Gastro-intestinal Cancers, Portal Hypertension and Bowel disease in the Tropics have had a major impact throughout the world. He has contributed and published various articles on Liver Surgery, Pancreatitis, Ileal and Colonic problem and Laprotomy. He is one of the pioneers in pancreatic hepatobiliary surgery in India

In recognition of his contributions, in 1987, he was elected as the President of the Association of Surgeons of India. He was in addition elected President of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology in 1983 and the President of the Ostomy Association of India in 1995. Presently Patron in Chief, Ostomates India. He was appointed as the Honorary Surgeon to the President of India, by former President of India, Mr. R. Venkataraman and is a Consultant Surgeon to India’s Armed Forces Medical College.
